The Benefits Of Adaptogens: Why These Natural, Stress-Fighting Herbs Are Worth The Hype

I’ve always had a slight hesitation when it came to modern medicine.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some hippie anarchist who heavily resists being on the conveyor belt of human society.

I’m vaccinated, get yearly check-ups, and will take a pain pill of the situation calls for it.

However, something about ingesting a medicinal tablet that was created in a laboratory somewhere just feels…unnatural.

Let me be clear, I would never, EVER advise that anyone steer away from modern medicine completely.

I would just personally prefer to turn to more natural alternatives if the option presents itself.

Enter…ADAPTOGENIC HERBS! 

What Are Adaptogens?

In order for a substance to be classified as “adaptogenic” it must be a non-toxic herb or root that has a physiological effect on the human body.

This most notably includes effects such as the reduction of stress, fatigue, and anxiety.

While they’ve become quite a trendy topic in recent years, this concept is nothing new.

The practice of using nutritional plants for their healing properties dates back thousands of years.  

The ancient Chinese, Egyptians, and Native Americans were all herbalists who believed certain herbs could provide medicinal properties. 

How Will They Benefit My Health?

Different adaptogens are used specifically to treat different things.

Here are some of the more popular adaptogens used today:

Scientific studies on these herbs are quite limited; however, there are numerous cases where adaptogenic herbs are used as the active ingredient in commercial medications.

The herbalist approach and mindset concerning adaptogens is that, with prescription drug costs being at an all-time high, certain herbs have the ability to supplement or even replace some prescription drugs all-together.

Now, this is an extreme mindset and one that you shouldn’t even consider before speaking with your medical doctor.

But, for certain cases, its defintiley worth a try!

For example, as I routinely mention, I’ve been prone to anxiety throughout my past to the point where I’ve been given prescription drugs to alleviate the symptoms.

Running ended up being my saving grace, which allowed me to heal myself through physical activity; however, I wonder if I would have been better served in attempting a more holistic approach from the get-go (in combination with my running habit).

This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” scenario, and different people will need  different forms of healing. It’s just an option I wish I considered at the time.

Fast forward to present day, and I use a variety of adaptogens depending on my mood and current physiological state.

Adaptogens are easily added to my daily routine since they oftentimes have minimal taste. Most days, I’m good just adding them to my morning drink or breakfast bowl!

1) Astragalus

This perennial plant (meaning it lives more than two years) is found in the northeastern parts of China.

The medicinal properties and nutrients are located entirely within the root.

Although it has been used for centuries by ancient cultures, modern evidence shows that it strengthens one’s immune system, has antiviral capabilities, and (in more recent studies) may prevent cancer.

This one’s a staple many use in their daily adaptogen routine for good reason!

2) Rhodiola

This adaptogen helps me keep a calm and clear mind, especially when I’m having a particularly stressful day.

This is another perennial plant that grows in many regions around the world.

While it’s mainly used to treat anxiety and depression by balancing one’s cortisol levels, it has also been used by many to treat high-altitude sickness from flying or mountain climbing.

If you’re looking for a mental energy boost, or are trying to avoid coffee, this might be a good option for you!

3) Chaga

The chaga mushroom, known for its superior healing properties, has been a pillar of Chinese and Japanese herbalism for centuries.

This adaptogen is unique in that it grows on birch trees and can take up to 20 years to reach full maturity.

In this time, the fungus collects nutrients and healing properties from the trees, which are what make it so beneficial.

No lie, I actually think this is the coolest thing. 🙂 

The most recognized benefits include it being a substantial source of B-vitamins, providing a handful of healthy antioxidants, and promoting a stronger immune system.

4) Ashwagandha

This adaptogen, aside from being really fun to say, is one of the more popular ones and definitely has a diverse range of benefits to back it up!

The long, brown roots from this plant provide benefits ranging from reducing emotional and physical stress, to regulating hormones, and even improving brain function.

In recent studies, it was also found to alleviate symptoms of asthma, anemia, and infertility.

5) Reishi

Another fungus, this substance is also an extremely unique adaptogen as far as the properties it possesses.

Used heavily in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the ancient culture claims it promotes calmness, a balanced mind, and inner awareness + strength.

It’s one of the oldest mushrooms to ever be used medicinally, with its use spanning over 2,000 years!

Today, it’s used for more concrete benefits such as improved heart health/liver function, and as a possible defense against tumor growth/cancer.

Further studies are currently being done on this substance to investigate what other health properties it potentially has.

While adaptogenic herbs can have amazing benefits to our health and well-being, I highly encourage you to do further research on whatever herbs you consider adding to your routine.

If we’re using them for medicinal properties, they should be treated as such.

Handle your adaptogenic routine with care!

Too much of anything can be detrimental to our health, so be mindful of the amounts you’re taking daily!

Start off with one or two adaptogens, then work your way up from there!
