The Top 8 Must Have Health + Fitness Tracking Apps

The Top 8 Must Have Health + Fitness Tracking Apps

If you’ve begun a journey towards optimal health and fitness and HAVEN’T been tracking your progress, you’ve been doing yourself a HUGE disservice.

To be honest, I’m not sure how much progress I would have ever made without tracking my statistics.

This is the single best way to keep the most crucial element during your journey: PERSPECTIVE!

You’re going to feel like you’re moving through quicksand (or not going anywhere at all) if you can’t look at where you started!

There are an unbelievable amount of resources + apps that we can use for this purpose!

In this article, I’m going to list my favorite resources that have stuck with me throughout the years.

Top 8 Resources To Track Progress On Your Health + Fitness Journey

1) Garmin

Type: Multisport

Cost: Varies

Being the ultimate powerhouse of fitness tracking, you REALLY can’t go wrong with any Garmin product.

The technology of the company is definitely the most advanced as far as tracking goes, and the customization options are endless.

Purchasing Garmin technology is a worthy investment and there are a number of varying price options based on the level of tracking you want!

  • For The Beginner

The Garmin Forerunner 15 ended up being PERFECT for me when I first started running!

I actually never took it off since it’s water-resistant and super comfortable.

It has all the tracking abilities you’ll need as a beginner (distance, time, pace, calories) for a lower price, and it comes in fun colors which was a major selling point. 😄

You can purchase one HERE.

[You can also find the most updated version of the watch HERE.]

  • For When You Need a Coach

If you feel like you’re past the beginner stage and want to take your training to the next level, I highly recommend looking into the Garmin Forerunner 235.

It tracks all the essential stats plus heart rate, daily steps and sleep — literally feels like having a personal health coach! 🙌🏼

The watch also comes with audio prompts, social media sharing, customizable watch faces and live tracking! 😮

You can purchase one HERE.

  • For The Jack of All Trades

If running isn’t your only jam, you’ll want to check out the Garmin Forerunner 935.

This watch has multisport features which allows you to track running, biking AND swimming stats!

A.k.a. PERFECT if you see triathlons in your near future!

It also comes with even MORE advanced tracking features — one of which allows you to fully customize training plans based on performance!

You can purchase one HERE.

I highly suggest if you’re looking into getting more serious about your fitness progression you just start out with a high-quality tracker right off the bat.

It was one of the best investments I made starting out!

P.S. All of these watches pair with an app which allows you to check stats + progress whenever!

2) Runkeeper

Type: Running

Cost: $9.99/month or $39.99/year [with FREE basic version available]

If you’re looking for a lower-cost option to start with, I highly, HIGHLY recommend Runkeeper!

The app interface is super easy to use and very accurate when it comes to tracking results!

I actually love this phone app so much, I use it in addition to my running watch.

The apps capabilities allow you to track basic stats — along with progress insights, workout comparisons and training plans with the premium version!

You can find more details about this app HERE.

3) Fitbit

Type: Multisport / Weight Loss

Cost: Varies

This is a great option if you’re looking to track stats for every activity!

I mean literally EVERYTHING. I’m talking steps, sleep, diet, etc.

It’s basically a pedometer on steroids.

The Fitbit Flex 2 Wristband vibrates + lights up when it detects you’ve been sedentary for too long — indicating when you should get moving!

It also lets you know when you’ve hit your step goal for the day!

All stats automatically sync with the Fitbit app so you can check your progress anywhere.

While I do enjoy the ability to track all of these things, my absolute favorite feature is the ability for weight loss tracking.

They’ve made a scale that automatically syncs with the Fitbit app, which tracks your weight + fat loss trends and progress!

It’s called the Fitbit Aria 2 Wi-Fi Smart Scale

While this scale is an investment, you won’t find a better one out there!

4) Lose It

Type: Weight Loss / Nutrition

Cost: $39.99/year [with FREE basic version available]

This is the only food tracking app I’ve EVER used throughout the years! 🥑🍉🍇🥕

I find it to have the most organized app interface in terms of tracking nutrition + calorie intake goals.

You’re able to easily keep track of caloric intake, micronutrient goals, meal planning, and even healthy recipes (for the premium users)!

The app is also constantly updating with new, improved features.

They’re even working on a new addition where you can snap a picture of ANY food and it will automatically log it for you! — I seriously can’t wait for this one.

I suggest starting with the free version to determine if it’s for you, then definitely look into getting the premium features!

It has made me exponentially more knowledgable about what I’m eating! 😋

You can find more details about this app HERE.

P.S. They’ve also published a killer book to teach you how to lose weight by tracking your food intake!

You can find that book HERE.

5) ShopWell

Type: Nutrition

Cost: FREE!

This is the app you’ll want to use when you’re not quite sure which grocery items are healthiest!

It starts out by allowing you to customize a profile based on nutritional goals + needs — this allows the app to recommend products to you based on dietary restrictions such as dairy-free, vegan, gluten-free, etc.

After setting it up, you’re able to take the app anywhere you go (likely the grocery store) and scan ANY food item, where it will tell you whether that item is within your nutritional goals!

This is primarily an educational tool I use to help me choose the best food items when I go grocery shopping every week.

It’s crazy how this app has opened my eyes to some products that I THOUGHT were super healthy, only to find out otherwise!

And don’t worry, if you find out your favorite food item isn’t as healthy as you previously thought…it gives you recommendations on which products you SHOULD be eating!

You can find more details about this app HERE.

6) Sweat

Type: Strength Training

Cost: $19.99/month or $119.94/year

If you haven’t yet heard of Kayla Itsines or the Sweat app, you may have been living under a rock for quite some time.

KIDDING…I was late to the game on this one too.

But seriously…this app is unbelievable in terms of providing women with easy-to-follow strength training routines that provide results! 💪🏼

I was immediately intrigued by the app interface as it’s super bright, fun and girly.

Throughout the workouts you’re constantly provided tips and motivation to get you through — and they only take 28-minutes! 😮

You’re also provided with support forums, recipe + meal plans, and progress tracking.

As of right now they have multiple programs available — so you can choose which one works best for you!

The different types of workout programs include At Home (BBG), Gym (BBG Stronger), Post Pregnancy, and Yoga!

Highly recommend starting out with the At Home (BBG) program as it’s super easy and low maintenance!

You can find more details about this app HERE.

7) YogaGlo

Type: Yoga

Cost: $18/month [with a 15-day FREE trial]

This is my absolute favorite yoga resource I use when I want to establish an at-home practice.

Available in desktop and app versions it allows me to take a yoga class with me everywhere — my favorite activity is taking a yoga class with me to the beach!

I always encourage others to start with the free trial to see if it’s right for you — but if you enjoy yoga I HIGHLY recommend subscribing to the monthly price!

While I love my classes at the local studio, they cost me around $10 a class!

This program is a much more wallet-friendly option, and it let’s me get a quick practice in before work if I have little time to spare.

You can find more details about this app HERE.

8) Calm

Type: Meditation

Cost: $12.99/month or $59.99/year [with FREE trial available]

I feel like I ALWAYS mention this app, but I can’t help it!

It’s seriously the best guided meditation resource I’ve ever found!

I recommend even if you’ve never considered starting a meditation practice, to give this app a try anyways.

This app was 100% responsible for helping me start a meditation routine — and I’ve gained numerous health benefits because of it (better sleep, reduced anxiety, heightened mental acuity, etc).

You can find more details about this app HERE.

I can guarantee if you implement at least a few of these apps into your daily routine, you’ll reap a HUGE amount of healthy benefits!

Each of these resources has had a huge impact on my health + fitness journey throughout the years, so I don’t take recommending them lightly.

I hope they’ll propel along your journey towards health + happiness like they have for me! 😊

Do you have any apps that help you along your healthy journey?!
